I had a few issues related to permissions on the script file as well as The document root was set to "/Library/WebServer/Documents" Instead of /Users/[Username]/Sites. I assume this is due to me not enabling home sites however just something to check. If you have issues the /private/var/log/apache2/error_log will tell you the issue. my case is was permissions on the shutdown script fixed with
chmod 770 sleep.scpt

I hacked together code that I was planning on using to do other things like restart the boxee app
or shut down the system
or launch a different

tried this and couldn't get it to work. script runs fine on mac, is in same folder as index.php in root folder, but isn't triggered on either mac or iphone (goodnight message comes up though). i tried saving script as scpt and app. user account is correct.

Hi Ben, great write up. i am doing something similar with a Mac Mini as a media server connected to a NAS Drive over WiFi and wired in to an AV Amp distributing movies and music over cat-5 throughout my house. I am using my iPhone to control Front Row etc with an app called "Rowmote Pro" downloaded from the App Store. this application is excellent and allows full keyboard and mouse control as well as launching and quiting applications and sending the Mini to Sleep. The only issue i had was waking once it was snoozing and will try your excellent suggestions tonight...!

I had some trouble debugging the command to sleep the computer, so i made a slight modification:

<?php
echo '<pre>';
system('./sleep.scpt 2>&1', $retval);
echo '</pre>';
echo 'Return value: ' . $retval;
?>

it echo's output straight to the webpage, and importantly 2>&1 catches the error output.

I also had some worries about allowing apache to do anything, so i went for the slightly more secure

1)  actually call
        system('sudo ./sleep.scpt 2>&1', $retval);
2) allow www to execute the script in the sudoers file
        sudo vi /etc/sudoers
add
        Cmnd_Alias TOOLS=/Library/WebServer/Documents/sleep.scpt
        www ALL=NOPASSWD: TOOLS

I did it! Just used:

tell application "System Events"
sleep
end tell

instead of

osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to sleep'

:-)

Thanks a lot for your help. But unfortunately this doesn't work for me. I tried to rename my sleep.scpt to sleep.app but when I start it, Leopard tells me that Classic Environment is'nt supported anymore. And when I start sleep.scpt, only the Scripteditor opens. If I click now Execute another error message appears: Unknown token can't follow these Identifier

I don't know what to do now... :-(

Perhaps not a good fit in your case, but you can use ssh to run AppleScript remotely: <a href="http://henrik.nyh.se/2008/09/using-apple-media-keys-over-the-network" rel="nofollow">http://henrik.nyh.se/2008/09/using-apple-media-keys-over-the-network</a>

Well I found out the problem. It just wasn't executing the script when saved as a .scpt.

So I used applescript to save it as an app and changed the code to 'exec... sleep.app' and now it works perfectly.

Thanks for your help.
