@gary - it depends on your idea and your budget as to whether you should choose a freelancer or an agency. With something like web development an agency can generally give you more experience as each person in the team tends to have several years commercial experience as well as a long list of previous clients. However, iPhone apps have been around just 18 months and so freelancers and agencies tend to be on an even platform in terms of experience. Ultimately it depends on who you trust to carry out your ideas, the skills you need (an agency will typically have designers and IA specialists), and your budget.

@suzanne - my opinion costs nothing (but my expertise varies depending on what you need doing). If you send me an email I'll be happy to look over an idea and let you know (for free) if it's a good idea and possible with the current iPhone limitations as well as a quote for how much it would cost to get developed. I'm happy to point you in the right direction for learning material if you're looking to develop something yourself.

I have an idea, infact I've had the idea for a long time I saw the show and thought "I wonder ?" you might be the answer to something I should have done a long time ago.. then again it's never to late to be who you were intended to be ! ..... so how much does your opinion and expertise cost a complete technophobe ?

Hi- very informative informing so thanks.
Would you advise individuals ( as in, not companies ) to search out independent freelancers or tried and tested companies like Cadile.com to develop their idea from abstract to app? I assume that bigger developer companies will take on almost any idea as they rely on the flow of building commerce and charge per project whether it sells or not.

@Michael - If you've got good ideas then a lot of iPhone developers will build the app for free and then just share the profit with you. Take a look at my <a href="http://bendodson.com/2009/10/16/how-to-pitch-an-app-idea-to-an-iphone-developer/" rel="nofollow">article on pitching apps to developers</a> to see what kind of thing you should be sending.

@Mohamed - Unfortunately I stand by my statement and I don't think there is any serious growth for Android developers. The market is completely unsuitable for developers and those that have ported things over from the iPhone have found that where they were making tens of thousands of pounds on the App Store, they are hardly making any return whatsoever on the android store. The fact that it is open source does not mean it will be a success (how many commercially successful open source projects can you name?) and whilst I agree with the sentiment, the fact is that Apple is way ahead of any competitors in the app store marketplace. That is the reason why all of the other mobile phone manufacturers are set to allow Adobe Flash to be installed by default as that is the only way they can standardise and make their phones as easily programmable as the iPhone.

Hi Ben
I am not a software developer or IT expert but do know the concepts of programming. For you to make a statement that there is no growth potential for the Android platform is unfortunate. Its only a matter of time for such an open source platform, which can run on any device, coupled with Java(which can be used on any platform, unlike Objective C tied to the Apple OS platform) to outpace the Apple ecosystem.

I got round to watching the show last night (sky+), It gave me an insight into how fussy people are even when they are getting it for free (a little discouraging)

I liked both apps on the show, I have a couple of really good ideas for apps but dont have the programming knowledge, which is the best route to follow to get them developed ??

@Omm - It doesn't cost anything to build an app (apart from the $99 developer license from Apple) so if you did it yourself of course it wouldn't cost that much. If you pay someone to build you an app, then it will of course cost you.

I really enjoyed this episode of the Gadget Show. It actually inspired me to write a blog post about the 10 must have iPhone motorcycle apps. Check it out here - http://www.bikesure.co.uk/bikesureblog/2009/10/10-must-have-iphone-motorcycle-apps.html
