Things Cloud Sync Feedback

Before I begin, let me state that I love Things, the To-Do app from Cultured Code. I started using it on the desktop when the first beta started a few years ago and I bought the iOS apps as soon as they became available (Things was the first app I bought for my iPad). As To-Do managers go, it's well designed and well thought through.

That is apart from one thing; cloud sync.

Whilst nearly every other To-Do app has managed to add some form of cloud sync, Things has failed to deliver. At present, if you want to synchronise your To-Do list between your iPhone and Mac, you have to do it by opening both apps at the same time on the same wireless network. If you have more than one device it gets more annoying as you constantly open and close apps to get them to play nice. Getting syncing working between multiple machines is possible with a Dropbox hack, but get it wrong and you'll lose items you've added.

Not having cloud sync a year or so ago was acceptable, but now it is one of the key requirements for any To-Do app. I can't count the number of times I've added things to the iPhone app only to forget to wirelessly sync when I get home and thus miss something important. Cultured Code have repeatedly said they are "working" on Cloud Sync but so far have come up with nothing apart from a few articles explaining why the solutions they were going to create wouldn't really work in the real world - despite the fact that revision management systems such as SVN and GIT have been around for ages, a simple xml file merge seems to be too complex for Cultured Code to develop...

Today, they proudly tweeted about a new page they'd launched which showed the "positive feedback we receive on Twitter". I find this grating purely because the URL has the phrase "what people are saying" in it yet is actually a completely biased feed which has been heavily edited (it's not real time). A couple of people have replied saying things such as "Can you do one for OTA-Sync requests?" so I thought I'd oblige with this script I knocked up in under half an hour.

The section below is a close replica of the new Things feedback page yet it instead shows up the negative tweets (in real time) that people have written about sync.

Note: make sure to look at it in a WebKit-based browser if you want the little cards to be arranged at annoying angles as per the original page

    February 10th 2012

    February 10th 2012
  • Just installed iOs and OSX version of @culturedcode Things beta for cloud sync, excited for some syncing!

    February 10th 2012
  • is anyone using @culturedcode's Things beta? I started with it years ago but sync issues made it a deal breaker. Is the new sync reliable?

    February 10th 2012

  • @culturedcode Why do some of the tasks on my iPhone show up as <missing title> after I sync with Things for Mac? This is a reoccuring issue

    February 10th 2012
  • @culturedcode this is old news and not an update at all. I suspect therefore that you are a long way off cloud sync. Will stick with ToDo!

    February 10th 2012
  • Finally! Things iOS -and-Mac Cloud Sync as one via Beta access what a long wait @culturedcode but seems to be worth it.

    February 10th 2012
  • @culturedcode Do you have any plan to support China user for cloud sync?

    February 10th 2012

Just as a separate note, I have tried to stop using Things many, many times. I have bought and tried-out around 20 different To-Do apps for the mac and iOS devices (I need one that works and syncs on both) yet all of them have fallen short in some way such that I stick with Things despite it's debilitating lack of cloud sync. If you know of an app which is as well designed as Things yet comes with cloud sync, please let me know.

Comments

A few people have got in touch with me about different To-Do apps so I thought I'd list a few of them here for other people that may be interested. At this point I'm still using Things (as I have beta access to their Cloud Sync implementation and it does work well) but I know there are a lot of people out there looking to change. I've listed each one that has been sent in along with my criticism as to why it wasn't good enough for me.

Doit.im 21st January 2012

Michel Beer:

I'm as annoyed as you are about the lacking of Things in the Cloud so far. I've found a nice replacement: doit.im. It's less beautiful, but the syncing over all the platforms is great!

I've seen doit.im before and had a play with it but I can't get past the bad UI - I find it a distraction. I'm actually on the Things Cloud Sync beta so I now have nicely syncing todos with Things (which is great) - I'm hoping they are going to release it publicly soon.

Flow 14th January 2012

Timo Hofmeijer:

You wanted a proper Things alternative: getflow.com

Very steep pricing though...

I was a beta tester for Flow around the time that I wrote this page. The problem (at the time) was that it didn't have native mac, iPhone, or iPad apps. It still doesn't have the mac or iPad apps so I pretty much discount it as I don't want a web-based app. Things has got this nailed with their native apps and I'm now a beta tester for the cloud solution which syncs everything effortlessly for free so I'm very happy with it.

Wunderlist 24th October 2011

Dominicus Björkstam:

Thanks for the blog about Things. I'm too one of those who have waited too long to get cloudsync for Things. I have tried the Wunderlist app for OSX, IOS and it works perfectly. Not as good as Things, but for the timebeing the one that comes fairly close.

I'm using wunderlist until Things cloudsync functions properly and is available to others than betatesters. They anounced wundekit a few days ago and this really sounds promising.

Best of wunderlist is that it's free for all platforms don't think wunderkit will be, but I'll hope to have a working Things then.

I've used Wundelist before (I think I've used nearly every app available at this point!) but the design just didn't do it for me. At the moment, I don't have any todo list apps at all on my iPhone (apart from the built in "Reminders" app which does the job temporarily) but I am using Things Beta on my macs which does have cloud support - I'm also on the beta list for the iPhone cloud sync for Things so I'm looking forward to that.

The Hit List 9th June 2011

Brian Auten:

Like you, I have tried EVERY todo app out there. I ALWAYS came back to Things... until now.

I found "The Hit List" and it is, for me, phenomenal. The sync service is great.

The iPhone app is awaiting approval in the app store, but the intuitive interface of the Mac App is enough for me to ditch Things... something I thought I would not be able to do.

I've looked at The Hit List in the past but as they didn't have an iOS app I discounted it - I had heard that the iOS app was in review a week or so ago so may give it another try once it launches (although lack of iPad app may be an issue).

Flow 1st March 2011

Sterling Zumbrunn:

Hey - great job on that blog post. When I saw the tweet this morning, I was incredibly annoyed as well, and I knew it would only be a matter of time before someone created a similar page with the negative feedback. I liked yours the best of all similar attempts.

One app I started looking at as an alternative to OmniFocus (which I am now using, having ditched Things) is Flow It's now in beta, and they have an iPhone app coming soon. It's very Things inspired, web based, and features collaboration. Only downside is it looks like it's going to be quite expensive - they're talking about something like $100 year. Still, if you need to work with teammates, it looks to be one of the best options out there. Who knows when CC will actually implement collaboration in Things? Could be another 2 years at this rate.

I have used Flow for a little while but the problem I had with it was that a) the iPhone app wasn't ready yet (so doesn't suit me right now) and b) it's a web app. One of the pieces of functionality I love about Things is that you can have a badge icon on the dock so you can instantly see how many items you have to do today but you can't do that with web apps. I was using another web based one a little while back (I forget which one - there have been so many!) and that was the drawback that annoyed me most. It's a shame as the Flow website is really nicely done similar to the MobileMe sites in that it looks like a native app (which is why they'll probably never create a native one).
