Ben Dodson

Freelance iPhone & iPad Developer

Work

I'm very lucky in that the work I do is incredibly varied and something that I enjoy. Whilst I started out as a PHP developer, my main focus at present is on iOS apps. However, I also do consultancy, public speaking, and training. I have also been approached by a number of publishers and I'm currently working on a book around iPad Development which should be published during 2012. You can find out more about each area of my work below.

iOS Development / Consultancy

I've been making iPhone apps since the introduction of the App Store in July 2008. I have built a number of my own apps (which have been featured by Apple amongst others) and I have built apps for a hugely varied client base; everyone from worldwide brands to one-man businesses. I have consulted on iPad magazines, built top 10 ranking apps, and been featured on national television. If you need an iOS developer, then I'm probably what you're looking for.

You can find out more about my own apps or take a look at the apps I've built for clients.

App Feedback Service

I get a lot of people emailing me every day with their ideas for iPhone, iPad, and Android applications. I can act as a sounding board to let you know if your app idea is feasible and the various options for getting it developed. I aim to reply to all emails and I am genuinely interested in every idea that gets sent to me. However, please make sure you read my article on submitting ideas to app developers before you contact me.

Training & Public Speaking

I have done a lot of work as a mentor for various agencies in which I am typically hired for a week or two in order to help train up developers and perform code reviews. This can take the form of working one-to-one with a developer in your company to help improve their skills or brush up on uncertain areas. However, I am also available for larger teaching seminars lasting several days and covering various areas of iOS development. Please contact me if you are interested in finding out more.

In addition to training, I am also often asked to speak at conferences / meet ups on a range of topics. If you'd like me to speak at your event, please get in touch.

Web Development

Below are a few of the website projects I've worked on over the last couple of years. They are all PHP 5 websites built to an object orientated MVC specification (usually with the CakePHP framework). If I worked on the HTML / CSS, then it is semantically valid with graceful degradation for any new browser features. I use jQuery for any JavaScript work that I do.

In addition to these websites, I also run a number of my own APIs such as WikiLocation and Tube Updates (as well as the APIs required to power my iOS apps such as Highlights). You can find out more about them on my projects page.

Curriculum Vitae

Having performed many interviews and job searches myself, it is my opinion that you will learn more about me and how much I can offer a business from this website than you will be able to from a CV. For that reason, I've decided to separate my CV from my website and host it on my profile at LinkedIn.

Hiring Me

I may currently be available for freelance work but I do receive several enquires per day. This means that I am unfortunately picky about who I work for and what projects I work on. At the moment, I am only accepting contracts and freelance projects relating to the iOS platform. I am not taking on any purely web-based work although I am happy to do website / API builds as part of an iOS project.

I prefer to work directly with clients rather than through recruiters. I am not available for any fulltime roles.

Please get in touch if you have a project you'd like me to work on.
